Digital Coders

When a homeowner types “best roofer near me” into Google, they get a list of links. When they ask an AI assistant the same question, they get an answer, and that answer usually names a handful of businesses. AI search visibility is simply whether your company is one of them.

Where homeowners meet AI answers

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: AI-written summaries at the top of Google, with links to the sources they used.
  • ChatGPT search: answers that search the web and link to sources.
  • Perplexity: answers with numbered citations to the pages it read.
  • Microsoft Copilot: built into Windows and the Edge browser, drawing on Bing.

How AI tools decide which contractors to name

They don’t pick at random, but no one controls the answer either. AI tools build their answers from what the web says about you: your website, your business listings, your reviews, directories and local news. The clearer, more consistent and more recent that information is, the easier it is for an AI tool to name you with confidence.

In practice, five things matter most:

  1. Your website says plainly what you do, where, and for whom. One page per service and a page for each main city beats one “Services” page.
  2. Your listings agree with each other. Same business name and phone number everywhere.
  3. Your reviews are recent and specific. Reviews that mention the job and the town give AI tools something concrete to repeat.
  4. Other sites mention you. Manufacturer programs, trade associations, local news and directories all count.
  5. AI tools can actually read your site. For example, OpenAI says sites that block its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, won’t appear in ChatGPT search answers.

How it differs from SEO, and where it overlaps

For Google’s AI features, the foundation is ordinary SEO. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no additional technical requirements.

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot are different: they run their own searches and choose their own sources. A company that ranks well on Google can still be missing from their answers, especially if its listings are inconsistent or its site doesn’t answer the questions homeowners ask.

That’s why we treat the two together. Good SEO is the base; AI search visibility makes sure every AI tool can find, understand and trust what you’ve built.

What you can do this month

The honest part

No one can guarantee that an AI tool will recommend your business; anyone who does is guessing. What you can do is make it easy for AI tools to recommend you, then measure every month whether it’s working.
